What is a VPN?

When you turn on a VPN, it creates an encrypted tunnel between you and a server that is handled by a VPN service provider. This means that your internet traffic is being directed through this tunnel making your data secure. When your traffic exits through the VPN server, it appears that your computer has the IP address of this server which helps protect your identity and your location.

This is a bit technical so here is an example to illustrate how a VPN works. If you are at a café or at the airport, you might want to connect to the public Wi-Fi network but you cannot be sure whether the network is legitimate or not and who wants access to your personal data. However, if you connect to a public Wi-Fi with a VPN, you can be sure that all your data is safe – not even the VPN providers can access your personal information.

Organisations can use VPNs to connect to local networks that are located in different locations around the world. This allows employees to access its organisation’s network resources while working remotely.

Does your business need a VPN solution?

VPN security for businesses

One of the main reasons and priorities for businesses is to make sure its data is protected.

The more a specific business is associated with sensitive data, the more it is necessary to enhance security measures. This is where a VPN can help your business.

Today, different types of technologies are changing the way business is done and how organisations operate. Attitudes towards data protection are changing as well. Communication is typically done online and with multinational companies it is a necessity. Therefore, it is important to formulate a good security policy that ensures the protection of sensitive data and corporate intellectual property. Sensitive data may include:

• Personal details of an organisation’s employees and clients

• Accounting and financial reports

• Marketing strategies

• New R&D projects

• And other sensitive information to the organisation

Limitations by VPNs

It is worth noting that VPNs do have limitations, and it is possible to track your online behaviour. Even if you have a VPN connected, cookies can still track your behaviour on a given website and also even after you have left the website.

Also, some websites consider traffic from VPN connections as suspicious and therefore they will not let you connect to their services. In these circumstances, you can try to connect to a different VPN server otherwise you might have to wait until you can access a network that you trust.

However, it is not debatable that VPN connections enhance your security online making you a much more difficult target for cyber-attacks.

China Telecom Europe can be your new VPN service provider so you can enjoy all the benefits with a proper VPN solution.
